Dancing Calendars

I am attempting to setup calendars to show the location of dances by date.

At the upper left, under Pages,  you will notice Dances in Mesa. This is my first attempt. It will take some time to get it perfected and updated with all the information I have.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or problems. I am using Google calendars so I am limited in my options.

A Great Night Dancing

A great night at Mesa Regal tonight, danced to the Road Runner Band until 10:30.

This was our first time at Mesa Regal and it was very nice, admission is $13 per couple. The dance floor is probably half the size of Greenfield, so about 4,000 sq ft. It appears to be wood parquet on cement, a little hard but otherwise very good. The dancers were great, a real fun bunch. Of course, it is hard not to have a good time when the Road Runner Band is playing.

This was the most fun we have had dancing in a long time. You can check out the schedule for both Mesa Regal and the Road Runner Band on the left.

Christmas Dancing

We were dancing at home last night and thought it would be nice to have some Christmas music to dance to. I looked through my songs and while there are a lot of waltzes I had little else then Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.

After spending some time with our friend Google I found Christmas Ballroom Dance Music by Linda and Roland. A nice mix of social dances. Titles include Silent Night (Waltz), Jingle Bell Rock (Swing), and We Need a Little Christmas (Polka).
Dancetime With Linda & Roland : Christmas Ballroom Dance Music

Roland has passed away but Linda is still going strong. You can check her out on Facebook and MySpace. I purchased this album on Amazon, and it looks like most of theirs are available. It is also available on as are the others.

I think I will download Dancing Along Route 66 tonight.

If you were not at Venture Out last night you missed a great dancing opportunity. Over half the chairs were empty and the music was great. The more I hear RNC the more I like them. They are playing this evening at the Good Life Resort and if we did not have other plans already, we would be there.

Friday Night Dancing

Now that there is no dancing at JohnE's on Fridays we need to find somewhere else to go.

Venture Out is starting their dancing this Friday with Myron Sommerfeld.

Mesa Regal has dances most Friday nights, 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Their calendar is on the left, it appears a little sparse so I am not sure it is every Friday.

Dancin’ Oldies

Even the old folks like to swing!

I made these from a pattern I got from The Winfield Collection. They stand about 5 feet tall.

Speaking of swing, this Friday night at JohnE’s, the Roadrunners are playing. This is a great husband and wife duo that play really hot rock-n-roll.

Mesquite at JohnE's

Mesquite Country Band played at JohnE's Friday night. A good band, they really got into their groove after the break, those that left missed a lot of great music. They did one of the best Mustang Sally's I have heard.

They are located at the NW corner of Arizona Ave and Warner in Chandler (map).

I have not been able to find a calendar, I know that Mogollon is playing next Saturday. You can check out their MySpace page here.

Chad Freeman and the Redline Band

They tell it better than I do:

“Chad Freeman and Redline is a cover band based in the deserts of Arizona. The diversity of these musicians is second-to-none as their mix is almost impossible to classify. With versatility and a broad song list, CF and Redline can adapt to fit nearly any situation. From honky-tonkin to hard-rockin, these guys put on one helluva show!!! “

You can read more about them on their MySpace page or their website at

Speaking of Reign-N-Country, check out their latest schedule in the band list on the left. Their music is very upbeat and powerful. Melody has done a great job of putting together an excellent set of musicians. They were really great last night at JohnE's, especially the second half. This is a band you will want to dance to.

Their website is working again and you can check it out at

Friday's at JohnE's

Reign-N-Country played at JohnE's last night. A great band, really upbeat country music. After missing three weeks of dancing it was good to be back on the dance floor, tiring but good.

Right Place, Wrong Time

First we miss the dance last Saturday night in Kadoka, SD, by a week. Then we were a day early in Gillette, WY, for the Two Step. Last night, in Douglas, WY, we were a week early for the big 80's dance. Will be glad to get back to Mesa and do some dancing.

Maybe we can find something in Ogden, UT this weekend, but I am not counting on it.

Dancing in Missouri

We are on the road so I am not sure how it is going in Mesa, if you have any information drop me a note and I will post it.

Here in Farmington, Missouri, the happening place is Nelson’s Music City. Nelson’s is actually in Knob Lick, but if I told you that you would have no idea how to find it. If you are out this way this coming Friday, drop on it and check out The Horns. Sounds like a good time.

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Saguaro Sunset Band

Speaking of Country bands instead of 50's bands...Saguaro Sunset played at JohnE's last night and they were absolutely great. A good mix of slow, fast, two-step, cha-cha, waltz, line, etc. This is a great band. Check out their schedule on the left, or at this link.

We are looking forward to their return to JohnE's.

JohnE's Cabaret Schedule

Johne has tweek the Friday night schedule. There are now less 50's bands and more country. Check out the new schedule at the link on the left, or click here.

AZ Country

A new venue for dancing in the East Valley. AZ Country had their grand opening July 9th. A Country themed Steak House, Sports bar, and Music venue, they are located at 1300 S. Country Club, the southwest corner of Southern and Country Club, (map).

There is an 11,000 square foot dance floor behind the restaurant and bar.

If you were there last night, let us know how it went.

Their website is, not much posted there yet, but it just opened.

Dance Doctors

Saturday night was a Pot Luck party at the new Dance Doctors in Gilbert. Located just east of Gilbert on the south side of Warner Road. We were late for the Merengue dance lesson but it look liked everyone on the floor was having a great time.

Music was prerecorded and the playlist very nice. Since JohnE’s was closed this weekend for floor refurbishing a lot of John’s regulars were here.  Significantly smaller than the floor at Greenfield Village, it got a little crowded at times, but not bad. Overall, a nice smaller dance venue.

They will be having the Gilbert Grand Opening soon, I have forgotten the date, but when I find out I will post it. It is not on their website yet. You can check out their calendar here.

The also have an online jukebox at their site, I really like the idea but the execution needs some work. Clicking the Back to Jukebox link takes you back to the homepage instead of the jukebox. Your playlist is created at and you have to create a profile that includes your birthday. I am not really wild about that, but it is your choice how you handle it. I did not find a way to go to the newly created playlist directly from the site, but clicking on Create Your Free Playlist takes you to

Nice place, we will be back.

Independence Day Pot Luck Party

Check out their website at They are located on Warner, just east of Gilbert Road. (map)

Dance Floor Resurfacing

The dance floor is being resurfaced this week at Greenfield Village. That means no JohnE's either Friday or Saturday. The floor should be ready by next Friday, July 9th. See you then.

Monday, June 28, 2010

Exit 40 Band

A lot of folks missed a good time at JohnE's Cabaret Friday night, the crowd was smaller then usual but the band was great.

You missed a great Country and Old Time Rock-n-Roll band. Jay Farris has put together a very good 4 piece band that has a great sound. The name, Exit 40, appears to refer to the age of the musicians and not the freeway....but they still have their stuff.

You can check them out at their website

9 to 90, Great Night at JohnE's

Bob Roppolo played a great set last night at JohnE's. He even had guest performers assisting him for a few songs. There were only 120 folks in attendance, ranging from young nine years to over 90.

If you are looking for a great place to dance on Saturday nights you need to check out JohnE's in Greenfield Village. The schedule and directions are posted in the left column. With only 120 dancers, that is 60 couples, there is a lot of room on the floor.

Shoes Getting Dusty

With my partner laid up with a pulled back muscle, not much dancing has been happening. We did get to dance a couple of nice slow dances at a reception this last Thursday, but that is it. We did  not take the chance of re-injuring her back this weekend.

Hopefully this coming week will be better. I have been going over the notes from our classes and we need to go over each and make sure we remember them all. I never realized that retirement would be so busy.

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Dancing in Payson

We spent the weekend in Payson and did not dance. The only thing we could find was a small dance floor at Tiny’s Family Restaurant from 6 to 9pm on Friday night. There is a live performer there doing 50’s & 60’s music but we did not make it over there.

A weekend without dancing seems really weird and sort of empty.

Dance Classes

Mary Lou Kaye is offering another set of dance classes beginning July 5th. You can see the list here or see her listing under Dance Lessons on the left.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

Rich Howard

The Rich Howard Orchestra played at JohnE’s last night. Good music as always. 160 folks dancing, with over $20,300 now donated to charity.

With that many people it is getting a little warm on the floor. Hopefully when they refinish the floors in July they also do something about the air conditioning.

Saturday, May 15, 2010

Danny Kealey Orchestra

The Danny Kealey (D.K.) Orchestra were hot tonight and had a great crowd at JohnE's.

This is a six piece orchestra that plays a wide range of music. To quote from their website:

"The band’s musical program includes songs from the 1920’s all the way through the 1980’s, specializing in music for dancing and listening from all eras and styles.  Included in this music are Swing, Fox Trot, Cha Cha, Rumba, Tango, Samba, Mambo, Waltz, Polka, and light Rock and Roll."

Roadrunners at JohnE’s

If you don’t want to come to the party at the “Y” there is always JohnE’s Cabaret. The Roadrunners will be back. They played on April 17th and were great. It is a real struggle deciding which to go to, I really liked this band.

This will be the last time they play before going back to cooler climes.

Dance Party at the “Y”

Dance party at the Tempe YMCA on Friday. Don’t worry about calling Mary Lou, just show up!

Fatcat Ballroom and Dance Company

I have not checked these folks out but they look interesting. It is on Thunderbird, so it is a little out of the way from Mesa.

They do have group lessons followed by open dancing on Fridays and Saturdays. What I found most interesting is that the video the lesson each night and put it on their website so you can review it. Very nice.

You can check out their calendar here and their videos at this link.

They are also listed on the left side of the blog.

If you have any experience with the Fatcats let us know.

Saturday at JohnE's

Another great evening dancing at JohnE's Cabaret. The Terry McFee Orchestra were especially good this evening. They seem to have added an instrument, or two, to their orchestra and it has really filled out their sound.

Of course, any evening dancing is a great evening.

Friday, May 7, 2010

Polka at Pulaski

Just back from the Pulaski Club. It was great to dance and talk with friends. We do need to practice the Polka a little more often, pretty rusty.

We had to leave earlier then planned when the band, that will be playing this weekend, decided to play with 4 of their 6 members. The music was so loud that I could not hear myself think and Denise had a pounding headache. Sheesh, I am having to yell at her to get her attention.

We have never been there when a band played before, and may not do it again. It is a great place with the sound system and canned music, but ….

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Time to Polka

Join us this Friday night at the Pulaski Club, 4331 E. McDowell in Phoenix. (map)

Doors open at 6:00pm and there will be a free Polka lesson at 7:00pm. Light munchies will be available and the open bar is very reasonable.

Polka is a fun dance and everyone has a great time. Bring your friends and join in on the fun. Dancing will go until closing.

Saturday, May 1, 2010

The Bustin Loose Band

At JohnE's last night the Chauffers were not there but were replaced by Bustin Loose. Admittedly I was not too happy, I had come to dance to Rock-n-Roll, not  Country.

With that said, this band is very good. Yes, Bustin Loose is a country band, they describe themselves as Country Music with a Kick!  They did play country, especially during the first set, but after the break they let their hair down and started to rock. Great music.

This is a good band and I hope Johne can get them back. I have posted their May schedule under Band Schedules. Hopefully, Shari, lead vocalist, can get her new Facebook site up and we will know where they are.

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Rock-n-Roll at JohnE's

This Friday the Chauffeurs will be playing at JohnE's at Greenfield Village.

Come have a great night this Friday from 7 to 9:45pm.

See you there.

Friday, April 23, 2010

The Desert Drifters

Another great night an JohnE's. Tonight the Desert Drifters played great country music. The floor was crowded for almost every dance and during the line dances the dancers took most of the room! Which left us non-line dancers crowded in the back. Guess it is time to learn the slide.

There were over 190 in attendance and the Timeless Tempe Tappers entertained us during intermission.

I have posted the Desert Drifter's schedule under Band Schedules if you want to check them out. They will be back at JohnE's on June 4th.

That KOOL Band – Awesome

That Kool Band is not just cool, they are absolutely awesome. They played the Broadway Palms this evening and were fantastic. I have not been that close to a drum set during Wipeout in over 40 years, it felt great. They added Lindsey Hendley for a few vocals and she did a superb job and rounded out the set nicely. During some of the songs the crowd was almost rowdy the music was so good.

Broadway Palms as a venue is questionable, the seating and acoustics were great, but the dance floor was sub-par, and the service was poor (but that is for a  different blog). They had setup a 12 x 15 foot portable floor in the back but it was sticky even with my shoes off and just socks. It is badly in need of a good cleaning and some wax.  We danced during the first set but did not during the second, we set a row back from the band and just enjoyed the music.

I am trying to get their schedule and when I do I will post it. For now, you can check out their website at

Traffic Issues

If you plan on dancing at JohnE's this coming weekend and generally use Southern and Greenfield, use an alternative route. The intersection will be closed from 8pm Friday to 5am Monday.

Country Dance Lessons at JohnE's

Before each Friday night's dance at JohnE's there is a line dancing lesson. The lessons start at 6pm and are different each week. The schedule I got this last Friday is:

April 16 - Cruision - a Cha-Cha line dance that is loads of fun
April 23 - Triple J - a West Coast Swing line dance that is easy & fun
April 30 - Review of all dances taught in April, which include:
  • The Electric Slide
  • Cowboy Charleston
  • Bad, Bad LeRoy Brown
  • Waltz Across Texas
  • Cruising
  • Triple J
May 6 - Patterned Partner Dancing, the teacher will be Anna Crews-Smith

Sounds like a lot of fun. Don't forget to check the dancing schedules listed on the left sidebar.

Saturday, April 17, 2010

The Road Runner Band

Pure Rock-n-Roll. They were absolutely fantastic last night at JohnE's. I am not sure how Ron does it but I could have sworn I heard more then one guitar last night. This is a three member band, Ron on guitar and keyboard, Carol on bass, and George, the little black box on drums.

Unfortunately for us, they leave the valley for the cooler country during the summer. They will be playing at JohnE's one more time before they leave, on May 14th. They reappear at JohnE's on Sept 17th.

If you like Rock-n-Roll, with the occasionally waltz and cha-cha thrown in, don't miss this band. This is a band that I would actually follow around town, they are that good.

Rich Howard at JohnE's

The Rich Howard Orchestra was great list night at JohnE's. Unforutnately we got there late and missed the slow polka, slow is my kind of polka. Rich does a nice selection of music and plays fox trots we can actually fox trot to. His WCS was great.

With the new times, we need to rearrange our schedules so we get there earlier, it felt strange having the dance finish at 9:45. It felt kind of "unfinished", it is going to take some getting used to.

But all-in-all a great evening, what can be nicer then ending an evening dancing with a beautiful partner.

Friday's Are Back At JohnE's Cabaret

Last night was the opening night of Friday night dancing at Greenfield Village Resort. Johne Klamm has a great list of bands that will be playing this year. Fridays will be Country and 50's & 60's nights. Last night we danced to Reign-N-Country, what a great band. Good, strong vocals and great musicians.

The dance floor at Greenfield is excellent. Last night it was especially nice because there were less dancers then usual, somewhere around 125. So you had plenty of room to shake it.

This year the dance times have changed to 7:00pm to 9:45pm, with one 20 minute break, and at $8 per person it is a great bargain for the quality of bands and the venue.

Why Dance?

A lot of people, especially of the husband variety don’t like to dance. I attribute this to the lack of experience. Most of us have never had any real dancing experience other then gyrating on the dance floor like possessed demons from Tasmania.

Why do you want to dance? Well…

Dancing is more effective, and cheaper, then marriage counseling. Think about it, what are you doing when you dance?
  • You have to touch each other
  • You have to look into each other’s eyes
  • You have to cooperate
  • You need to be patient with one another
  • You have to touch each other
  • You (the male) need to learn to lead
  • You (the female) need to learn to follow
  • You need to learn to block distractions so you can concentrate on your partner
  • You need to trust your partner to be where they need to be when they need to be there
  • You need to learn to connect with each other
  • Did I mention you have to touch?
What does all this mean? YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO COMMUNICATE!

And in the process you get to have fun. When was the last time you asked your spouse, let’s have some fun and go to marriage counseling this weekend? Dancing is a lot more fun!

Dancing Information

The best way for us to know where to dance is to share information. So, if you know of a place to dance, a great band, or a good place for lessons that is not listed here, leave a comment to this post. I will move it to the appropriate category.

Have fun and we'll see you on the dance floor!
